During the special assembly that the school and Google have put together, we've learned things about Google and how Doodle4Google have started. The Google representatives have prepared a presentation for the students.
This pretty much summarize what the representatives have explained to us.
When we think about the word Google, the first thing that come to mind is the word "search" right? The QUEST of finding an answer to something that we are looking for online. Well, they said that Google does so much things aside from search and stuff.
They asked the student to make a guess which of the four below is the very first Google Doodle that they came up with. The answer is the first one.
Since then, a bunch of Google Doodles have been made like the ones below.
Then they started a contest called Doodle4Google which gives k-12 student from 50 states a chance to win a scholarship. Every year, there is a specific theme.
Here's the winner for 2011 by Matteo Lopez, a seven year old student from South San Francisco California. This design is created based from the theme "What I’d like to do someday...”. Lopez wants to be an astronaut someday. He won a $15,000 scholarship for this design and his school received $25,000 grant. The winner for Doodle 4 Google in 2012 is Dylan Hoffman from New York City. The theme for this was "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..."
2013 Winner was Sabrina Brady from Wisconsin. The designed was conceptualized from the theme the "Best Day Ever". She said that when she was ten years old, her came home from the war and it was her best day ever. This is just a very touching concept.
My daughter is the state of West Virginia's winner this year. Her entry was about creating a cure for cancer as we lost love ones from this dreaded and killer C. Below is her essay.
The world would be a much better place if we could stop cancer from taking so many lives each year. Technology has made it easier to detect and treat but we still have a long way to go. One life lost is one too many.
Her entry was inspired of the fact that my husband's family have lost lives of love ones from cancer-related diseases. She's sad that she did not get to meet her grandmother (my husband's Mom) and she also witnessed how hard it was for her Uncle Dave to go through the cancer treatment which eventually led to his demise.

She really made a great google doodle. I hope she wins.
I think Google is awesome! So much better for research than when I was at university when I had to go to the library, go through card catalogues and then the stacks to find relevant material for my essays, etc.

"The world would be a much better place if we could stop cancer from taking so many lives each year. Technology has made it easier to detect and treat but we still have a long way to go. One life lost is one too many."
