THAT is what you Need - Egg Cartons and Green Thumbs.

After celebrating Easter with the family, we came home  and did a project I have planned for the kids.  I gathered up all our seeds, some are  left over from last year, some  I have dried up from our harvest, and there are some that were given by friends and family.  I have never stated  seedling inside the house  and thought  this is the year to try it.  
I have  been saving the  egg carton trays  to use for this project.  I used to have those small planters but since I wasn't using them, I throw them away. Anyhow, my kids enjoyed  this activity more than coloring eggs.  They always love to help me in the garden  and this is the first time we have done this so they were very happy.
 We bought a bag of garden soil and we used it to fill the egg cartons.  I used a little bit of Miracle Gro houseplant food  to water it.
 The popsicle sticks came in handy in labeling the seeds we  planted.  
 It is so funny that my daughter colored her thumb green before we started our project lol.  Between the two, our son  can easily grow just about anything that he  stick in the dirt.  Our daughter thinks a that if she color her  thumb green and said a little prayer before  burying the seed in the  soil, it will grow.  
Imagine how happy  they are to see the seeds come s to life after  few days.  Our daughter was beaming with joy because she said that her technique works lol.
 I love how pretty this red radish looks, it's a beautiful color.
 Involving the kid in this kind of activity  makes them appreciate  the  harvest even more.  They are very proud.  I think that it's a great learning experience for them to be able to  experience and witness how fruits and vegetables are being produced.
Even though it is 44 degrees today, we took advantage of the sunlight and put  the  seedlings out our porch.  I have to constantly check on it though because the birds are eyeing on it.  We have  started to prep  some part of our garden the other day and as soon as these are big enough to transplant, we  will transfer them.  How about you, did you start gardening this year  yet? Shadow Shots

    That's a wonderful idea! I love to grow herbs in the house, and this is a great way to start them instead of buying them in a pot. Thanks!

    I think planting in egg cartons is a brilliant idea. It's an awesome way to recycle and I think the little holes are the perfect size.

    What a wonderful way to get your children involved with gardening. I can't wait until my son is old enough to do it with me. we recently planted nine fruit trees at our house.

    I have planted in egg cartons before and it works great. Now, I go to the farmers market and buy the ones they grow.

    This is so sweet, I'd love to do these with my son when he's older. I remember growing seedlings in pots and egg cartons when I was a child and it was great when I saw them shoot up :)

    I love this time of year. I want to start some seedlings but we are going to be moving and just not sure when exactly. I cant take my garden with me and if I am going to do it, I dont want to leave it for new people. Sadly.

    I love that you've got this all spread out on the floor for maximum engagement! Looks like the kids had fun growing things and that they are starting to sprout! I'm so ready for GROWING season!

    This is such a great way for kids to learn how to grow. I did something simular last year with my daughter and she loved it.

    I have never grown anything before but I am moving into a nice house here in FL in a few weeks and I wanted to start doing just that so i am very happy bout this post cause now I have some ideas! I have a back porch that is screened in with some hanging plant holders that would be perfect! Thanks!!

    Love what you and your family did! When I started learning about gardening I also learned about using egg cartons to start planting the seeds. Perhaps I'll try that this year when I do some veggie gardening.

    This would make such a good play date activity! Everybody has egg cartons sitting around or one they can save, so easy to collect the supplies for each kid to go home with little garden!

    That is such a smart idea. I would love to make my own garden using items that I already have. I did make a seedling with a Kcup recently and it was so easy to do. I'd love to grow my own mint for sure and basil and cilantro! Saves tons of my money!

    I think the seedlings look so pretty coming out of their 'shell' - no pun intended. I did seedlings only once before, and I think it would be pretty fun to do with my nephew.
