Give Your Body The Gift Of Sleep

A Guest Post by Dr. Alma Jones

Most people assume that sleeping less will mean more waking hours and, as a result, more calories burned. However, according to the study people who sleep less than six hours a day actually gained more weight in the study! For every hour you sleep at night, your chances of becoming obese go down by about 30%. It was then theorized that lack of sleep increases a person’s stress hormones which mess with the body’s metabolic processes. So, if you want to stay fit and to lessen your chances of gaining weight, give yourself the gift of sleep!

The study mentioned above was the latest to prove that your room’s temperature and your sleep cycle may actually cause you to gain weight even more. One generally accepted theory is that your body will try much harder to keep you warm, therefore burning more calories in the process. The body needs to maintain its temperature for it to function properly. Once the temperature drops, it encourages heat production through shivering and increased physical activity. This increase in heat production results in more calories burned – and more pounds lost.

The study implies that weight management may entail a lot more than simply engaging in regular exercise and eating a healthy diet. There are many factors, other than physical activity and diet, which can contribute to weight gain. Based on the findings of the study, sleep and temperature influence your body’s metabolism.

But before you start rigging your freezer to every room in your house, remember that the reason for weight gain in lower temperatures is that people who feel colder actually move around more to feel warm. In other words, although a colder room may help you lose weight faster, keeping your room too cold, enough for icicles to grow from under your nostrils, is probably not the most prudent solution.

Knowing the Signs Saves Lives!

When my doctor diagnosed me with some abnormalities to my heart, I am in constant reading of valuable information regarding the matter. I receive this from a newsletter of denise austin and want to share it to you guys..

Here in the United States, we're fighting a very tough killer: heart disease. Every year, 1.2 million people suffer a heart attack, and almost 40 percent of them die. It doesn't have to be that way! The faster a person having a heart attack gets medical care, the better his or her chances are for survival and recovery. And you can do something about that!

Whether you're 25 or 85, it's important to know the symptoms of a heart attack. While heart disease is more common among older individuals, young people sometimes experience heart attacks, too — many times without any history of heart disease. Even if you know your heart is strong and pumping, you probably come into contact throughout your day with people who are at risk. A simple way to be prepared is to make sure you recognize these signs of a heart attack, from the American Heart Association, so you can respond ASAP!

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Discomfort in other areas of the body, such as the arms, back, neck, jaw, and stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Light-headedness
  • Jaw pain

If you think you or someone else is having a heart attack, call for emergency help right away!
