Different Types of Camera Lenses

When it comes to camera lenses, they are available in fixed/prime focal lengths or zooms. Zoom lenses come in a variety of focal lengths that are categorized for various types of lenses. If you’re interested in photography, you’ll want to brush up on the different types of camera lenses there are so that you can get the image that you want in as few attempts as possible.
Wide-Angle Lens

In most cases, a super wide-angle lens is anything that’s under 20mm. Wide-angle is 21 to 35mm. With the creation of the digital camera and the APS-C format, camera companies have begun releasing specific lenses for this particular format. The range for crop frame for DSLR cameras is 10 to 24mm for wide-angle lenses. Photographers most often use wide-angle lenses to capture images of architecture and landscapes, but they have also been used to take pictures of large groups of people.

Standard Lens

Standard lenses have a maximum focal length range of 35 to 70mm, but the most used standard lens is the fixed 50mm lens. These types of lenses are most often used for street photography and documentary purposes or whenever the photographer needs to move quickly in order to capture the action.

Medium Telephoto/Portrait Lens

Portrait photographers almost always use the focal range that lies between 80 and 135mm. Fixed lenses that have those lengths create optimum framing for images of heads and shoulders. Even though medium telephoto/portrait lenses are specialist lenses, you can actually find them at rather reasonable prices.

Telephoto

Any type of camera lens that has a focal length that’s anywhere between 135mm and 300mm is considered to be a true telephoto lens. Camera makers release a vast variety of telephoto lenses at in an equally large variety of price. Usually, telephoto lenses are used to take images of wildlife and sports, but their main purpose is to pull distant objects closer to the photographer.

Specialist Lenses

As far as specialist lenses are concerned, you’ll have several options to choose from, including super telephoto, macro and fisheye lenses. Super telephoto lenses have a focal length that’s greater than 300mm and are most often used by photographers who specialize in sports and wildlife photography. Macro lenses are made with the ability to focus on objects closer than a regular lens, which offers a 1:1 ratio. A macro lens is used to capture still-life images of small objects. A fisheye lens can be compared to a wide-angle lens and gives the photographer a skewed view of whatever it is that they’re taking a picture of. The very middle of the image is greatly enhanced, and the object is reduced in size in every direction around it.

Buying Guide

While you’re shopping for lenses there are certain factors that you’ll want to keep in mind so that you can make the best choice. As far as choosing between the focal length, you’ll want to pay attention to the zoom and prime lens so that the angle and range you’re looking for can be achieved. Other things to pay attention to include the aperture, image stabilization, auto/manual focus and the overall quality of the lens.

The type of camera you select isn’t the only thing that you’ll want to pay close attention to. Spend just as much time deciding on your lens as you do the kind of camera that you buy.
