Nostalgia # 7 - Clock I Made

Every time I see this old clock, I'm reminded of junior high shop class. This was the second project that I completed that year. I can still remember attaching the number and assembling the moving parts. At the time, I thought that the motor would only last about a year because the internal gears and parts are made of plastic. I am amazed that it still works to this day and keeps perfect time. Even more amazing is the battery life that we got from a single AA battery. I installed the original battery in the latter part of 1981 and it managed to hang on until around the year 2000. I wouldn't have thought it was possible but I seen it with my own eyes.

It is possible that somebody did change the batteries while I was away in the navy but both parents denied ever fooling with this clock. When I left for boot camp, my mother sealed off my room like it was a crime scene and was very vigilant at keeping people out. I don't know why, maybe it was superstition or something. When I returned on leave one time, I showed them that the clock was still working and they couldn't believe it was still keeping perfect time as well. The next time I visited, the clock had stopped working. I really felt as though I should have honored that battery with a proper burial...hehehe

Very interesting story about the clock's battery. Unbelievable but true, right?

It's a great hand-made. Have you planned to make another?
